Mount St. Helens Volcanic National Monument
After Washington, I drove down to Portland and stored my camper. From Portland I took side trips with Sue after I picked her up at the airport.
Mount St. Helens has made an amazing recovery. It is not obvious to the casual observer of the destructive explosion that happened 36 years ago (see Mount St Helens Geology). However, the river bed is still choked with ash and note how this 4 foot diameter tree was snapped like a match stick and the bark stripped away on the side towards the volcano. The tree was 9 miles away from the blast! Mount St. Helens Geology
